All or Nothing

In the many years I have spent training people and helping them to reach their weight loss goals, I have come across one single thing that can be most destructive to reaching any kind of goal.

It is the “All-or-Nothing” attitude!

It is very important to remember that nobody is perfect.  We all have goals and sometimes we don’t reach them in the time frame we set out to and that is perfectly OK!

Repeat after me – I Do Not Have To Be Perfect!

I see people put themselves on these very rigorous workout and diet plans… they start out very strong and all goes well for a while.  But then it becomes really hard to keep it up and one day they might just eat a little something they are “not suppose to” eat,
or they miss one workout and then they think it is the end.

They throw in the towel right there and then thinking that this is the end of all their hard work and oh well, now I have ruined everything so I will just go back to my old habits because I don’t have what it takes to do this anyway!

This is the WRONG Attitude!

This way of thinking makes it almost impossible to overcome a setback.  These kind of negative thoughts and behavior spins around in your head and leads to poor self-image, stress and destructive behavior.

This is why healthy lifestyle is the word – but so is balance and enjoyment of life.

It is totally OK if once in a while you have a piece of cake or you drink a Coke… or maybe you didn’t make it to your workout that day because you had to work late – So What?

If you are going to eat something sugary and sweet or fatty and decadent, or if you are going to take a day off from your workout, well then you might as well enjoy it! Consciously enjoy it – make it worthwhile – savor it!

Enjoy the piece of cake, or the hamburger – and then you get back on the wagon.  Don’t beat yourself up about it and give up everything you have worked so hard for because you encountered one little hurdle or you stepped out of bounds for a moment… this is really important.

When it comes to diet and exercise – you have to find a healthy balance… if you don’t it can most certainly mess with your head and you will never get to where you want to be – you will never reach your goal.

Enjoy – and move on!

But now, once again – remember the word balance. I am not giving you a license now to do this every hour or every day…

If you have a sweet tooth or there is something specific you really enjoy and you know it is not totally in line with your “healthy lifestyle”, then here is what I do…

See, I LOVE Ice cream… If I could, I would eat ice cream every day – but now to satisfy my cravings and at the same time to enjoy myself and life – I allow myself two (small) scoops of ice-cream a week.

I can either have half a scoop, four days a week, or one scoop twice a week or both scoops all on one day… it is my choice.  And some weeks I might not have any, or I might have one scoop all week – but I still have the free will to choose!

This is a very important statement I just made… As human beings we do not respond well to anything if it takes away our free will – our privilege to make choices for ourselves. So no matter what it is – try to always find a way to give yourself different options.

So forget about the “All or Nothing” attitude and simply set out to do your best.  There is no such thing as failing… it is all about picking up where you left off!

To your Health and Success!

Kind regards
